LCC INTERNATIONAL AWARDED PATENT THAT IMPROVES
WIRELESS NETWORK SIGNAL ESTIMATION
Company To Focus On Commercializing Intellectual Property
MCLEAN, VIRGINIA , January 17, 2005 – LCC International, Inc., (NASDAQ: LCCI), a global leader in wireless voice and data turn-key technical solutions, announced it has been awarded a US Patent covering certain systems and methods used in LCC’s proprietary analysis tool, “CAPPE”. The CAPPE application is uniquely valuable for carriers seeking to design and deploy networks providing location-based services, 3G, mobile broadband (for example, video streaming and TV), digital audio and video broadcasting services for mobile subscribers. Given the demanding latency and service availability requirements with these types of deployments, the tool provides a more accurate and effective means for carriers to design and optimize mobile wireless networks.
Commenting on the value a tool like CAPPE brings to wireless carriers, Roger Entner, Ovum’s vice president of Wireless Telecoms said, “Wireless carriers are always looking to improve propagation analysis as it relates to radio coverage and fade margins. By analyzing a site’s fade margin, carriers are able to implement cost and quality measures such as lowering the power in a proposed site or lowering the number of sites required in a specific area.”
“ LCC’s R&D team is a rare commodity,” said Dean Douglas, president and CEO of LCC. “CAPPE is just one example of the hidden treasures being uncovered as we work to enhance our current business and extend our reach into adjacent business spaces. We are quite proud of the work this group does and in this instance, the invention of Dr. Nicolae Cotanis, CAPPE’s author.”
Continuing, Mr. Douglas said, “As a consultancy, we have focused on providing consulting services and not necessarily on promoting the innovative tools we have developed to support our projects in emerging technologies. We fully intend to maintain our independence with respect to the use of software applications, however we now plan to leverage our internal tools by creating asset-based service offerings and practice areas geared towards enabling carriers to bring emerging data, video and other 3G applications to market sooner in a more efficient and cost effective manner.”
The CAPPE technology has been used successfully by LCC on projects undertaken for digital audio service providers as well as with carriers seeking to deploy content rich 3G mobile applications. Offering high geolocation accuracy, CAPPE enables engineers to analyze fade margins, spatial and time availability performance over a service radio coverage area. It also provides improved capabilities to estimate multi-path propagation and shadow fading.
